Choosing a domain name that masters SEO right out of the box!

In 2021, the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) world is ever expanding, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to get noticed on the internet. In this blog post, I will share some of my own top tips and tricks to allow you to purchase the perfect domain name for your website today that will draw traffic in from a purely organic (free) source. Because, let’s be honest, Google advertising costs way to much money when your starting off, and is not guaranteed to work for you.

Before we start, let me introduce myself a little. My names Jack, the owner of JDP Networks and a website developer and content writer for 8+ years. Over my 8 years of experience I have learnt the best way to rank on Google without spending a penny – first of all, the domain name. So with that being said, and me introduced let’s jump right into the action, shall we?!

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a fancy term used to describe the link / URL of your website. For example, the domain name for this website is jdpnetworks.com. Domain names have many different extensions (also known as TLD’s) such as .co.uk, .uk, .com.us and the list is ever expanding. There are over 500+ TLD’s / extensions on the web today, and this number will increase indefinitely.

Why is a domain name important for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

When Google, and other search engines scan your website for content, they search for keywords that the user has typed into the web browser and displays the best results based off the query. If you have one of these ‘keywords’ in your domain name, you have a much higher chance of popping up at the top of Google’s search results.

So, how do you pick the right domain?

For this section of the blog, we will use the jdpwebdesign.co.uk domain name as an example. In case you are unaware, JDP Web Design is a sub-company of JDP Networks which offers web design and development for customers.

We chose this domain for 2 simple reasons, 1, it matches our trademark (JDP) and 2, it includes a keyword! (webdesign).

Try and make your domain name as straight to the point as possible, and also completely relevant to your project while doing so. For example, “Jane” is opening a flower shop. Some might look at this and jump directly to janesflowershop.com or similar. Before you jump straight to choosing the domain you should first break down parts of the domain and your company, project or organisation itself to find the best pick for SEO purposes. Yes, the keyword “flowershop” is included in this domain, but it can do better.

There are a lot of extensions / TLD’s for domain names, so making use of them is excellent at both building SEO and allowing visitors to easily locate, and remember the link to your site for later. Janesflowers.shop is a perfect example of this, as it includes a keyword, is short for people to remember and uses a unique TLD / extension.

How to purchase a domain?

Once you are ready to purchase a domain name, head on over to this link, type in the name and hit search!
